Living Generously: The Heart of Generosity

Each week throughout the “Living Generously” sermon series, we will post a devotional to use for personal study and reflection. We hope these devotionals will help you draw closer to Jesus!

Scripture: Luke 21:1–4

As Jesus watched people bring their offerings to the temple, many gave out of their wealth. Then a poor widow stepped forward and gave two small coins—all she had to live on. To the world, her gift seemed insignificant. But to Jesus, it revealed a heart of deep trust and generosity.

The widow’s offering reminds us that God does not measure generosity by the size of our gifts but by the spirit in which they are given. Her trust in God outweighed her fear of scarcity. Her willingness to give, even from her poverty, teaches us that generosity is less about resources and more about relationship—our relationship with God, who provides all that we need.

Living generously begins with a posture of the heart: choosing to give ourselves fully to God, trusting that God will use whatever we offer, no matter how small, to bless others and build the kingdom.

Reflection Questions:

  1. When you think about generosity, do you tend to measure it by size or by spirit?
  2. What fears or hesitations keep you from giving more freely of your time, talents, or treasures?
  3. How might God be inviting you to take a next step in trusting Him with what you have?

Prayer:
Generous God, You see us not by the size of our gifts but by the love in our hearts. Teach us to give as the widow gave—trusting You fully, holding nothing back, and believing that You can multiply even the smallest offering. Help us to live generously in all that we do, so that our lives may reflect Your abundant grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
