First Wayne Street’s sanctuary is a wonderful acoustic space, and First Wayne Street has a long history of supporting and offering fine music. Our music program includes vocal and handbell choirs for preschoolers through adults, and often features soloists and instrumentals (including both members of our congregation and of the community).
In addition, we produce an active concert series. Every Wednesday in the months of June and October, at 12:15 p.m., First Wayne Street and AIMA (Adventures in Musical Arts) showcase a 30-minute musical performance from a talented local performer or group of performers. A light luncheon follows each performance and can be purchased for $5 (except that after the Germanfest concert in June, the cost for lunch is $6.)
Please email Geoffrey North or call the church office at 260-422-4681 to add your name to our mailing list.
Concert schedules for June & October will be announced in the prior month. Please check our events calendar for details.
We look forward to seeing you!
Join us for the next WOWS series in October 2018.
Schedule will be announced in September.
Past Series (June 2018):
June 6: Geoffrey North, Germanfest Organ Recital
Geoffrey North will perform favorite selections on the fabulous Beckerath pipe organ, all by German composers with names starting with the letter “B.” Music by Bach, Buxtehude, Brahms, and more! A catered lunch of German food will be available following this recital.
June 13: String Shift, with special guest Geoffrey North
String Shift is a unique small string ensemble, featuring performers from the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, who perform fun and engaging programs combining pop music and a variety of classical styles. They will be joined in this concert by pianist Geoffrey North.
June 20: First Wayne Street Chamber Choir
First Wayne Street’s newest choir, the Chamber Choir, under the direction of Geoffrey North, is an auditioned ensemble that specializes in difficult, mostly a cappella choral music. This concert will feature sacred and secular selections.
June 27: Kenneth Jiang, piano
Virtuoso Fort Wayne pianist Kenneth Jiang will perform his own transcription of the Variations on a Theme by Paganini, by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The variations, originally with orchestral accompaniment, will be heard here in a monstrously difficult arrangement for solo piano. Kenneth Jiang’s technique and artistry will astound you! This concert is not to be missed!
First Wayne Street United Methodist Church is committed to offering the best in the musical arts – not just through WOWS concerts, but also in our regular Sunday worship services, held every Sunday at 10:00 AM. The church features a talented choir of amateurs and professional Choral Scholars that sings in worship each week as well as a praise team, adult handbell choir and a graduated music program for children and youth. Hymns are ecumenical and traditional and preaching is insightful. Upcoming services with a particular focus on music include a spectacular hymn festival in October and Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve. Join us!
