Congregation prepares to welcome new pastor

If you have been hibernating all winter, you may be missing out on the exciting news that Reverend Jason Morris has been appointed as our new pastor effective July 1, 2020. You may be wondering why this is so exciting… So many reasons!

Pastor Jason’s education, gifts, talents and experience makes him a great match for our congregation. After getting a degree in Music Education at Ball State University, Pastor Jason did his seminary training at the Methodist School of Theology in Delaware, Ohio. He has over 20 years of ministry experience, most recently planting a church at a YMCA in Fort Wayne through St. Joseph United Methodist. His skill set includes music, worship leadership, community engagement, leadership development, preaching and teaching.

Many facts about Pastor Jason impressed the Staff Parish Relations Committee: his thoughtful and genuine responses to our questions, his sense of humor, his youthful energy, and his deep sense of commitment. Pastor Jason has a passion for reaching the disillusioned and the lost. He is a visionary leader with a real heart for the community and the church’s role in making disciples for Christ and reaching beyond our walls. The committee feels he has the skills to reach some of the many unchurched people who live downtown. He has been endorsed for First Wayne Street ministry, without reservation, by those who have worked with him.

After learning of Pastor Jason’s history and skill set, Pastor Cheryl’s response was, “First Wayne Street will be exceptionally well served by this appointment!”

In addition, a delightful family has been appointed to First Wayne Street! Pastor Jason’s wife, Emily, is also music education major from Ball State University. They have two daughters, Samantha (13) and Jocelyn (10). Pastor Jason’s parents (both retired music educators) live in Fort Wayne and he and Emily have other family members in Indiana and Ohio.

As a family they enjoy hiking, swimming, and state parks. The girls’ interests include art, baking, reading, engineering, videography, photography and travel (Samantha); and singing, acting, musical theater, dancing, make-up, fashion and the beach (Jocelyn). Emily’s interests are music (especially singing), nature, hiking, Italian food, reading and family and friends. For Pastor Jason… coffee, reading, hiking, skateboarding, Harley motorcycles, and cooking.

Be watching for ways you can help welcome Pastor Jason, Emily, Samantha and Jocelyn to our church family. It’s exciting news and exciting times are coming.

  1. I served as ministry volunteer with Pastor Jason at Christ UMC in Lafayette. At that time, he wore many hats, among them being youth pastor, worship leader and assistant/associate pastor. I can say without hesitation that Pastor Jason and his family will be a blessing to First Wayne Street. For me, I have the privilege of calling Jason and Emily friends. Ironically, Jason and Emily will be serving their second church in my hometown of Fort Wayne, while I now call North Carolina home. Even though we are separated by miles, we remain very good friends. When you get the chance, ask Jason about his coffee, Cool Ranch Doritos, and Harley Davidson. All great conversation starters! Blessings to all.
