The Generous Life: Discovering Joy Through Gratitude and Generosity

We all want to live a meaningful life. We want our lives to matter. We want to make a difference. We want our families to flourish, our relationships to deepen, and our days to be filled with purpose rather than simply busyness.

Jesus offers a surprising path toward that kind of life: generosity.

Beginning Sunday, September 13, and continuing through the first Sunday of October, First Wayne Street United Methodist Church will embark on a new worship series called The Generous Life. This four-week journey will explore what Scripture teaches about living with open hands and open hearts, not because God needs something from us, but because God desires something for us.

Too often, conversations about stewardship are reduced to money. While our financial resources are certainly part of faithful discipleship, biblical stewardship is much bigger than that. It is about recognizing that every good gift comes from God and asking, “How can I faithfully use what I’ve been given to bless others and participate in God’s work in the world?”

Together we’ll explore questions like:

  • What if generosity is less about what we give and more about who we are becoming?
  • How do gratitude and contentment free us from the endless pursuit of “more”?
  • What does Jesus teach about living with compassion instead of accumulation?
  • How can our time, abilities, influence, relationships, and financial resources become a joyful offering to God?

Throughout the series, we’ll discover that generosity is not born from guilt or obligation. It grows out of gratitude. It is a response to the overwhelming generosity of God, who has given us life, grace, hope, forgiveness, and love beyond measure. As Jesus reminds us, “Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.”

We’ll also hear the wisdom of Scripture that generous people “refresh others” and, in turn, find themselves refreshed.

As part of this series, we’ll invite everyone to prayerfully consider their next faithful step. For some, that may mean serving in a new ministry. For others, it may involve sharing gifts, extending hospitality, investing in relationships, or becoming more intentional with time. And yes, for many of us, it will include considering our financial giving, not out of pressure or obligation, but as an act of worship, trust, and thanksgiving.

We believe generosity changes lives. It changes the lives of those who receive. It changes the lives of those who give. Together, it enables the Church to continue sharing the love of Christ, serving our neighbors, and investing in the future God is calling us to build.

Whether you’ve been part of First Wayne Street for decades or you’re just beginning to explore faith, we hope you’ll join us for this important and inspiring series.
