Our beliefs guide everything we do, from Sunday worship to community outreach. We are committed to growing in faith, showing God’s love through action, and building meaningful connections with each other and our neighbors.
First Wayne Street United Methodist Church has deep roots in Fort Wayne’s history, dating back to the early 1800s. Our story began with settlers like Rev. James Holman, who preached to the community from his log cabin in 1823. As the city grew, so did the church, evolving through various locations and congregations.
Our journey saw several milestones, including the construction of Berry Street Chapel in 1840 and the formation of Wayne Street Methodist Episcopal Church in 1850. In 1968, two congregations reunited, marching through the streets in a symbolic act of unity, setting a precedent for other churches nationwide.
In 1973, we dedicated our current sanctuary at 300 East Wayne Street, a beautiful downtown edifice designed to reflect our commitment to Christ. Key features include bronze bells from Holland and stunning stained-glass windows that tell stories from creation to the unification of the Methodist Church.
Today, we are a diverse congregation that welcomes people from all walks of life. Honoring our Wesleyan heritage, we embrace open theological reflection. Music remains a cornerstone of our worship, and we take pride in offering excellence in praise and harmony.
At First Wayne Street, our mission is clear: to develop disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We are committed to shaping both our future and our community with faith, love, and purpose.
